What momme means, and why we chose 22.
Momme is how silk is weighed. It tells you how much silk is in the fabric, not how well it was made.
The unit.
One momme is 4.34 grams per square metre of fabric. So 22-momme silk weighs about 95 g/m², and a heavier number means more silk in the same area.
- 16 momme
- about 69 g/m²
- 19 momme
- about 82 g/m²
- 22 momme
- about 95 g/m²
- 25 momme
- about 109 g/m²
- 30 momme
- about 130 g/m²
What it does not tell you.
Momme is a weight. It does not tell you the grade of the silk fibre or how tightly it is woven. Satin is a weave, not a fibre, so a satin pillowcase can be polyester; momme is only stated for silk.
Why 22.
Most of the silk pillowcases we compared are 22 momme, and so are ours: the pillowcase, the bonnet and the scrunchies are all 22-momme mulberry silk. We print the number on every product page, so you can compare it.
We weigh a sample from every lot and post the result, pass or fail.
Made in it.
